How Pyrolytic Self-Cleaning Works
Pyrolytic ovens heat the cavity to around 480°C during the cleaning cycle, incinerating food residue to a fine ash that can be wiped away. The process takes 1.5 to 3 hours and the door is locked throughout for safety.
Because of the extreme temperatures involved, pyrolytic cycles put significant stress on components. The door lock mechanism and temperature sensors in particular can fail over time.
Why Pyrolytic Cleaning Cycles Fail
- Door lock motor failure: The cleaning cycle will not start if the door cannot be confirmed as locked. A faulty door lock motor prevents the cycle from initiating.
- Temperature sensor (NTC) fault: If the oven cannot accurately measure internal temperature, it will abort the cycle as a safety precaution.
- Thermal fuse blown: Pyrolytic ovens have a thermal cutout set above normal operating temperatures. If the oven overheated previously, this fuse may have blown permanently.
- Control board fault: The electronic controller manages the pyrolytic sequence. A fault here can prevent the cycle from starting or completing.
- Door seal damage: A damaged or perished door seal allows heat to escape, causing the oven to overheat and trip safety cutouts.

Is It Worth Repairing a Pyrolytic Oven?
Pyrolytic ovens cost significantly more than standard models — often £500 to £1,500 or more. Even at the higher end of repair costs, fixing a fault on a pyrolytic oven is almost always better value than replacing it. The only exception is an older oven with a control board failure where parts are obsolete.
A Note on Pyrolytic Door Locks
If your oven door is locked and will not open after a cleaning cycle that has ended, do not force it. The lock releases once the oven cools to a safe temperature. If it still will not open after 30 minutes of cooling, there is likely a fault with the lock mechanism that requires engineer attention.
