A gas cooker that won't ignite is a very common fault. In many cases it's straightforward to fix — and sometimes doesn't require an engineer at all.

Check the Simple Causes First

  • Food debris blocking the burner: Soups, sauces and fat can clog the igniter and burner cap. Clean thoroughly and try again.
  • Wet igniter: If the hob was recently cleaned with water, let it dry completely. Wet igniters won't spark.
  • Gas not turned on: Check the gas supply and any isolation valves.

If Still Not Igniting

  • Worn or faulty igniter: The spark electrode has worn out. Cost: £80–£140.
  • Faulty ignition module: The electronic control that fires the sparks. Cost: £100–£170.
  • Blocked burner jet: Requires cleaning or replacement of the jet. Cost: £70–£120.
